St. Hilda's and the MDGs
* Fall 2008 As part of our Fall
Stewardship campaign inserts are placed in the Sunday leaflets outlining
the 8 Millennium Development Goals. More background information is
displayed in the Narthex for the weeks leading up to Christmas.
Appeals are made to church members to come together and discuss possible
actions on the MDGs in the New Year.
* January 11, 2009 Millennium
Development Goals Committee is formed with two teams. Each team decides to focus on one
theme. One team decides to address goals 2 and 3 by
working to promote primary education for girls.
The other team decides that access to clean fresh water
was integral to eradicating extreme poverty (goal #1) and
preventing child mortality (goal #4).
* January - February 2009
Each team researches possible projects that St Hilda's could partner with and
how to get the congregation involved.
* Team Two decides to promote World Water Day
in the church.
* March 2 While researching in the

(Kairos) website members come across the World Water Day (WWD)
resolution.
* The World Water Day resolution is brought
to the Environmental Steward. The resolution is reworded to
include reference to the MDGs and to concerns about the protection of
watersheds. It is decided to bring the
WWD resolution before the four local
governing bodies on the Sunshine Coast. Help is sought from the
Sunshine Coast Conservation Association, Gibsons United Church, and the
Roberts Creek Official Community Plan Committee. All support the
resolution.
* March 17 Delegation appeared before
the Town of Gibsons. The town adopts the resolution and proclaims
World Water Day.
* March 18 Delegation appeared before
the District Municipality of Sechelt. District adopts the
resolution and will write letter to federal government.
* March 19 Delegation appeared before
the Sunshine Coast Regional District. District adopts resolution
and agrees to send letter to federal government.
* April 21 Delegation appeared
before Sechelt Indian District Government. They adopt the
resolution.
* A
narthex display was made
for World Water Day.
* An evening of ritual, film, discussion and
a plan for action centered on Water Access
was held on May 29 in the Sanctuary and church hall.
* August 24 2009 Planning begins for
Fall MDGs activities.
* September 27
Development Goals Sunday Mr.
Terry Umbach, representing Sechelt Rotary gave a presentation about us
partnering with Rotary to help the people of Ndandini, a small village
in eastern Kenya, obtain a permanent, sustainable, clean source of
water. But more than this our parish has an opportunity to
continue helping this village achieve other MDGs - such as access to
education and basic health care. The project's legwork in Ndandini
has already been done with the consultation of the village people and
with the Kenyan government. We will work over the next two months
to raise funds and awareness of this project. Read
Terry's letter to the congregation. Click onto the link
