Outdoor Salal + Cedar Eucharist.
Rev. Laurel Dykstra of Salal + Cedar will be presiding at an outdoor Eucharist on Saturday Sept. 3rd at 4PM at the picnic area of Roberts Creek Provincial Park at the bottom of Flume Road on Beach Ave. This is a beautiful chance to connect with the more than human world and listen for the Word of God in scripture and in nature.
Laurel is doing pastoral visiting for St. Bart's and St. Aidan's - if you would really like the opportunity to worship outdoors but cannot make it on Saturday, we may be able to set up an additional time -"wherever two or more are gathered." Sunday Services
Through September to the first Sunday of October, we will have a number of people speak to us about creation, its wonders and our responsibilities and responses. Some of our speakers will join us after the services for Green Circle conversations. Here is our schedule of speakers:
- September 4th Professor Michael Healey, who will speak on Salmon and our Environment.
- September 11th Coyote Terry Aleck, Indigenous Teacher-in-Residence
- September 18th Michael Starr September 25th Laurel Dykstra – Salal + Cedar Eucharist
- October 2nd Heather Rankin and Blessing of the Animals.
Meditative Walks
We will have weekly opportunities to walk or sit and contemplate creation and our place in it. We will begin each gathering with a few thoughts to consider, followed by a prayer; we will then spend quiet time in appreciation of creation and the environment which we are visiting. Our meetings will be at 2:30 on different days each week. This is our current schedule:
- Tues. Sept. 6th Our place of worship: St Hilda’s: the labyrinth, cemetery, courtyard
- Wed. Sept. 14th Forest: Kinnikinnick Park: meet at the playing fields west of the school
- Mon. Sept. 19th Seashore: Snickett Park: meet at picnic table on the path west of Ocean Ave.
- Thurs. Sept. 29th Appreciation of First Nation Land: meet on the waterfront at the totem poles at Sinku Dr & Chelpi Ave.
- Mon. Oct. 3rd Animals and crops: Heart and Sol Farm at Heritage and Crowston Rds.
Book Study
“Saving Us: A Climate Scientist’s Case for Hope and Healing in a Divided World,” is a book written by Canadian and Christian Katherine Hayhoe. It provides hope and some practical ideas for making a difference in facing the climate emergency. We will read a section (about 50 pages) each week and meet to discuss our responses to questions like “What sounds good here?” “What is alarming?” and “What can I do?”
