Jim began his ministry in the Diocese of Massachusetts where he was assistant rector of All Saint’s Church in Belmont and chaplain at McLean Hospital, a psychiatric hospital associated with Harvard University. He then was rector of St. James the Less, Northfield, Illinois and later canon to the ordinary (equivalent of our archdeacon) in the Diocese of Chicago. In 2005, he was elected Bishop of San Diego where he served for more than 12 years. He subsequently served on the faculty at Virginia Theological Seminary.
Before ordination, he was a teacher and administrator in two different boarding schools. He received a B.A. in Mathematics from the University of the South and an M.Div. from Virginia Theological Seminary. He has served on numerous boards.
Jim is married to Terri Mathes, a writer. They have two children, four grandchildren, and a labradoodle, Jolie.
